11 Devonshire Square,
London, EC2M 4YR
Project Size: 29,500 sq ft
Project Duration: 17 weeks
The new workspace for Equinix in Devonshire Square presented the opportunity to combine and contrast sophisticated modern technology within the historic setting of the former East India Trading warehouse.
The brief was to create a variety of working environments, to suit both local staff and visiting colleagues from around the world. Collaborative work spaces are distributed throughout the six floors, along with meeting rooms, social spaces and open plan desking. A generous reception area welcomes you on the ground floor and the upper most floor is used entirely as a breakout space for staff.
The design throughout is respectful to the existing building. Exposed features are apparent wherever possible and materials used are sympathetic to the original structure. Semi transparent materials have been used in some scenarios to create zones of interest and to improve acoustics whilst offering subtle sightlines through to original features. An example of this is the stretched fabric ceiling panels used in the lift lobbies.
The glazing system was specified to create high performance meeting rooms whilst ensuring the partioning was as minimal as possible. The head and floor tracks are sunk into the adjoining surfaces to ensure the curved panes of glass appear to float seamlessly in sharp contrast to the rough, angular concrete appearance of the building.
Hi-tech elements such as the glass box communications cabinet and video walls are key design features and indicate the IT capacities of Equinix to visitors. All IT features have been designed carefully to perform acoustically within a challenging environment. A ‘green’ wall of living plants and featuring an automated watering system flanks a video wall in the main breakout area, creating a vibrant backdrop for social occasions or team presentations.
